Mes notes
Reykjavik
- https://reykjavikcampsite.is/ everything works online. Check what other travelers have left. You could find thing you need without buying.
- Bonus (x2) around, so it's easy to get some food
- Ice-cream parlor around the corner at walking distance of the campground
- Direct bus to downtown
- Perlan interactive nature museum
- To eat quite pricey. Messin or Apothek (lunch) really good food. It's a good idea to have reservations.
- https://bbp.is/ for hotdogs. Many location. I recommend the hotdog with everything. Cheaper.
- Sun Voyager - sculpture to remind Iceland about their heritage. Nice scenery
- Harpa Hall
- Hallgrimskirkja - main church, can be visited. Offers a nice view of the city
- Lava show also in Reykjavik
Golden circle
- Thingvellir
- Geysir
- Gullfoss
- If possible try squeezing Bruarfoss. I've never been but it looks fantastic
South coast (maybe combine with Golden circle)
- Seljalandsfoss + Gljufrabui. 2 magnifiscents waterfalls, they are at walking distance from each other. Must see!
- Skógafoss (+trail) + Kvernufoss, 2 must see waterfall at least the first one.
- Sólheimasandur plane crash on the black sand beach
- Dyrhólaey natural reserve beautiful scenery but no chance to see puffins at this time of the year
- Reynisfjara black sand beach with basalt columns. Must see!
- Lava show in Vìk
- Nice camping in Vìk, there is an old school bus retired as a coffee shop next to it.
From Vìk to Skaftafell
- On route, stopping at Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon
- Nice camping in Skaftafell
- Nice hike to Svartifoss. Inverted basalt columns with waterfall in the middle
- If time, there might be tours on the glacier
From Skaftafell to Höfn
- Fjallsárlón a lake with icebergs, there are tours to approach the ice
- Fjallsárlón + diamond beach. Must see. Icebergs (small) everywhere. Might see some seals.
- Ok camping in Höfn. Open year long but not open all day. Be patient.
- Outside of Höfn, Verstrahorn. Nice mountain at see level. Nice scenery
- Eating in Höfn, Pakkhus. Nice experience
From Höfn to Myvatn Lake
- That's a long stretch. Not much civilization along the road except if you're willing to go outside the ring road.
- I'll enjoy the scenery except if you want to stop and have a hike somewhere. There are some but they might be outside the ring road.
Myvatn Lake
- Viti crater in the middle of the lava field. Nice scenery
- Namaskard lava field. Must see!
- Myvatn nature bath to end a beautiful day. Hot bath with a beautiful view of the lake. Worth the money not like blue lagoon
- Nice camping in Reykjahlíð
- Eating Reykjahlíð, Mylla. Nice experience
- Vindbelgjarfjall, nice hike to the top of the mount. Pretty hard but worth the view on the lake
From Myvatn Lake to west coast
- You're pretty much on your own. I didn't have the opportunity to explore.
- Godafoss, nice waterfall
- Akureyri is quite nice eventhough I didn't spent much time there
In the west
- The Cave Vidgelmir. Must see. Lava cave. Really nice experience
- Hraunfossar Waterfall. Must see. Hundreds of waterfalls flowing between the bedrock and the lava field. It's more interesting to see it after visiting the cave since you'll have an explanation of the phenomenon
- https://www.caferiis.is, go there for a really nice lamb selection. Worth it!
- https://ust.is/english/visiting-iceland/protected-areas/westfjords/hornstrandir/, go there for the wilderness and the arctic fox
Misc
- Drive around Snæfellsness peninsula. Nice scenic route. Many spots to enjoy nature. Sparsely populated.
- dive.is if you're in the mood for snorkeling (golden circle). Nice experience but I would not recommend on a tight schedule
- west fjords. Beautiful places to visit but I would not recommend on a tight schedule
- Glymur waterfall (west coast) one of the highest waterfall in Iceland. A nice hike on a cliff to get to the top of the waterfall. Need to cross the river. Awkward “bridge” crossing at the bottom, water crossing at the top. It's better to start by the river crossing at the bottom. Awkward.
- Not to far from Reykjavik, Reykjadalur hike. Easy hike in a valley to get to the hot part of the river where one can bath. Access from Hveragerði
